Middle East Politics

This course explores the politics of the 21st century Middle East and North Africa, with an emphasis on the Arab world and the events of the so-called “Arab Spring.” We will focus on the following themes: (1) how everyday life intersects with politics in the contemporary MENA region, (2) thinking beyond sectarianism in analyzing MENA politics, (3) attention to time: issues of past and future, temporality, history, sequencing, and possibility; (4) thinking beyond (American) foreign policy while remaining moral beings; and (5) understanding the power and limits of the art/science of comparison.
